Wash the Deck

  1. Before you treat your deck, dirt and grime should be thoroughly cleaned. Remove debris from between deck boards using a putty knife. Pay special attention to the areas where decking timber cross the joists.

  2. Sweep the deck thoroughly.

  3. Choose a suitable cleaner. Use and follow the instructions of a conventional deck cleaner. Some require the decking to be wet first. Some don’t.

  4. Clean the deck. Use a paint roller, or try a small to medium pressure washer to wash the deck. You can also use a deck cleaning products that use Oxalic acid to strip back the aging timber and return then wood to its former glory.

  5. Let the deck dry. Wait few days for your deck to dry completely before applying any timber protection product.

Decking Oil or Stain Checklist

1. Clean the Deck. Sweep the deck till the surface is clear of debris (dirt and leaves). Use a pole sander equipped with 80-grit paper to dispose of any furriness brought about by washing.

2. Replace any lacking or popped nails and screws. Replace protruding nails with deck screws barely longer than the nail. If a nail solely barely protrudes, you may additionally do more damage than good trying to pull it out.

3. Apply a Deck Cleaning Product.

  • Apply a hardwood deck cleaning product and follow the label directions.

  • Rinse the cleaning product carefully with water from the deck and surrounding region.

4. Apply the sealer or stain.

  • Apply a deck stain product formulated for hardwood with UV inhibitor and color of choice (follow instructions on the label)

  • Use a roller to apply the sealer to the decking, covering three or four boards at a time. Use brushes and small rollers for railings, planters, and benches. Don’t let the sealant dry or puddle. Two thin coats is better than one thick one.

  • Wipe/clean off excess product that is on the surface of the deck (typically 30 minutes after application)

  • This is an important step in the process as excess product can create sticky and shiny spots on the deck

Please remember to apply the stain or oil under the right weather. Avoid applying it in direct sunlight, windy weather or at a temperature of 30 degrees or more, and be sure that there is no chance of rain for the next 24 hours.

Always obey the instructions of the manufacturer as shown on the label of the item and in any associated literature.
